Cyclone Lusi Technology Challenge

Mrs Binnie started off by telling us what our challenge was, which was to construct a raincoat that had to protect us from Lusi the storm. Then she told us which things we were allowed to have for the challenge. We needed: 4 plastic bags, 6 paperclips, 1 roll of cello-tape and 1 piece of colored paper.

We were put into groups of three to five. We started off designing in our heads what/how we were going to make our raincoat and what it was going to look like. We had to include… A hoodie that had to fully cover our head and a pocket that had to hold a phone. There had to be no gaps and had to fully cover our shoulders and torso.

We chose the smallest person in our group so that the plastic bags could cover most of her body.

We fitted the first plastic bag over her shoulders and also her waist. We cut another plastic bag in half and used that for the sleeves, and last but not least, we put a plastic bag over her head (not covering the face!) to represent the hoodie.

We covered up the gaps with the left over plastic from the bags and paper-clipped the hoodie to the shoulders.
We only had half an hour to complete our raincoat so everyone was in a bit of a mad rush!

After time was up we packed up all the mess we made and made our way to the floor.

We left a gap in the middle of the floor to represent the cat-walk
and at the end Mrs Binnie waited with a camera to take the models picture… We had a lot of fun making and designing our very own raincoat! There were a few disagreements but it all worked out to be a great experience.

106 Word Challenge Kane

DEAR DAN CARTER,
I told her that you had sent that
box to me, but when she lifted the lid... she saw a rugby ball and started to cry. I got told off for letting her open it because she was scared of rugby balls. So my Mum sent all the gifts inside the box to the church. Now  I don’t have anything at all because of her. I felt like beating her up but then I would be grouded for life. So if you could, Dan Carter, can you send me another box and could you put a lock on it please.

Sophie & Macy

It all began on that cold, windy, horrific evening when Peter and Margret were cooking chicken noodles in a cup. Margaret was slowly and steadily lifting the lid off of the delicious noodles that she wanted to eat so badly, her temptation was getting to her. But when she lifted the lid she froze and said  “Oh... my... gosh. It's even more yummy than it smells like'. Her heart was beating so fast she couldn’t control it, she got her her metal, giant fork ready for the scrumptious feast, she scooped noodles out of the cup. They turned out disgustingly horrible.

‘But When She Lifted The Lid’

Dear Roselyn,
I told her and told her not to even TOUCH! the jar. That jar belonged to our Great Grandma who came from a secret association that worked under the New York City drainage of.. nobody knows. She dragged it out, scratching the wooden floor, from under Mother's bed and stared at it with her mouth wide open, wanting to know more. So she opened it, but when she lifted the lid... she saw a note at the bottom of the jar and it had some kind of magic word, so she whispered it and the world slowly ended!

Careers Expo

Mrs Binnie announced we were having a Careers Expo day on the 10th of December. She gave a Dream and Discover booklet. We started to come up with ideas for our careers choice. I chose Zoologist and Cheyenne chose Veterinarian. We also got another Big Idea booklet to write down our information, questions and bibliography. We got to go to the Library and have the computers to find out more information about our career. On the computers most of us went on www.career.govt.nz to get most of the information we needed. Then we started choosing partners with a similar career to partner up with for our careers board.  After our partnering was finished we started covering our board with paper and cutting out our headings. Then we typed up our information on the computers and found pictures we wanted for our boards. Once Mrs Binnie had checked our work she printed it for us to collect and stick on our boards.

Hayden And Braden  For us the most exciting part was that we got to dress up like our career and bring along props to suit our Career choice. After a lot of preparation and organizing we were finally ready for the next step. Sticking, gluing, mistakes and then  relief when we were finished.  The day had finally come for the CareersExpo!

We walked in with our heads high and feeling confident. Mrs Binnie chose spots for us to set up our boards and get everything organized for the afternoon.                                                           Georgia and Emily

It was really exciting and had a buzz in the air, there was colors everywhere, people dressed up, adults and children all in one hall! Lots of people from around the community came to see all our hard work and were really impressed.  They asked us all sort of questions such as 'Why did you choose this career?''How do you get into this career?' and 'What are the qualifications you need for this career? 'In the end it was time to go home, but we all had so much fun preparing for our future and learning about all different types of career choices. We hope the Community and Kindergarten had fun and learnt some things they didn't know before.

Room 8 Nydia Bay Camp!!!

On the 4th of November 2013 it was finally time for room 8 to go on school camp! The destination we were heading to was Nydia Bay in the Marlborough Sounds. But first, to get there we had a 1 and a half hour bus ride, and a 1 and a half hour boat ride, which meant a LONG day ahead of us!

First of all, when everyone arrived in room 8 at 8:30am on Monday, Mrs Binnie, Ms Mannix, and all 4 camp parents were flat out packing gear, and sorting the last minute things to do/take on camp! Once everything was sorted we had to take our big pack, and our day bag down to the bus which was waiting for us outside the front of the school! The bus driver, Jack, loaded all of the big packs into the bus, and the day bags, we took on with us.
Here is a photo of us inside the bus!
Here is a photo of us loading all of our gear onto the boat.
After the bus ride, once again it was time to unload everything, and to carry it onto the boat, named the Gallieo. Georgia S was lucky enough to be taught how to drive the boat, also she got to sit on the high chair where the driver of the boat would usually sit! Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride, and the 1 and a half hours on it seemed to go rather quickly!

When we finally arrived at Nydia Bay we had to unload all of the gear off the boat, this part took the longest as the lodge was 800 meters away, which was uphill too! As soon as everything was up at the lodge, we sat down and had our lunch! Then we all got to know the place, we set up our bunk-rooms etc. After that,we headed off for a short walk to the beach, where we looked for different sea creatures, we found fish, starfish, scallops, oysters, and tons of mussels! We even discovered that Georgia H is Room 8's female version of Bear Grylls!! She ate a sea-worm, a mussel, oyster, scallops, and even a fish eye - all raw!

Our other highlights of the week was doing the activity rotations! They were: Fishing, Kayaking, Hobo Stove Cooking and Bivouac Building. We also liked going swimming and jumping off the jetty!
