Science Presentations

In Term 2, Room 8 had to choose a topic to do with forces, (flight, buoyancy, wind, friction etc.) and demonstrate an experiment with a buddy or by themselves…

The topics Room 8 had to choose from were:

- Wheels.
- Cogs.
- Planes and flying.
- Electricity.
- Magnets and magnetism.
- Wind.
- Sound.
- Buoyancy.
- Cars, trucks, motorbikes etc.
- Friction.
- Toys.
- Forces we can see, and forces we cannot see.

Before we demonstrated our presentation, we had to learn about our topics, and all forces.

For example, we had to learn why wheels had cogs, and match the parts of a bike to it's correct place…

Some of Room 8 had to do it in their own time, because the experiment wouldn't have worked if we didn't have the right equipment.

Here are some photo's of the great presentations students in Room 8 did…

Room 8's Science Experiments

Room 8 have been looking at forces for Inquiry in Term 2 and we found and experiment to do with a force which was flight, it was called a Balloon Rocket.

The three questions we had to find out about were:

- What makes the rocket go slower?
- What makes the rocket go faster?
- How could you measure the speed?

We found out that by cutting the straw it made it go slower…
So therefore, having a longer straw would make it go faster.
We used a timer, but we figured that you could also use a phone,
computer or anything with a timer on it.

Everybody in Room 8 thoroughly enjoyed doing this experiment, and it was a fun way to learn about flight.

Here are some photo's of Room 8 doing the experiment…

The Climbing Wall

Climbing Wall

On the 26th of May Room 8 went on the Climbing Wall.

For most of Room 8 it was new to them, so we had to learn all the new skills in order to be safe when using the wall.

Mr Johnstone taught us how to use the harnesses, how to belay and how to spot if there is danger.
Everyone in the class got to have a turn at climbing but we all had to do belaying aswell.

When Mr Johnstone was teaching us all about how to be safe around the climbing wall, he told us that the belayer was the most important person!

Room 8 really enjoyed it and we hope to do it again!!

Dear Kitten!

Mrs Binnie shared a video with room 8 (Dear Kitten). Dear Kitten is about an older cat welcoming a kitten into his house and giving him advice. Watch the video below. It is cute!

Then Mrs Binnie gave us a task.We had to create our own versions of Dear Kitten/Puppy

Here are some  examples of Room 8's Dear Kitten/Puppy:

Dear Puppy: DO NOT go near the girl they call Jasmine, she bites. By Kane

Dear Kitten: You will see all the new and exciting things outside and you will think yay! I'm going to have fun all day, but trust me it is the scariest thing ever! But I think you will love it. By Aimee

Dear Puppy: You will get fed at 7:30 in the morning and 5:30 at night. If you are really hungry just eat the cat biscuits but don't let them catch you. By Traye

Dear Kitten: If one day you are feeling extra hungry and you want more food, look cute and pretend you haven't had any food once they gave you free breakfasts. By Elena

Dear Kitten: Never go up to the neighbours house because they will flip you! By Ruby

Dear Kitten: The biggest room in the house with all the big spongy pillows is the cuddliest room. Be there by 6pm and you will have the best seat in the house. By Jordan

Thank you for reading our blog. By Kane and Sorraya.

Mothers Day Bunting Flags

Last week for Mother's day our lovely friend Marie, (Paul's Mum) offered to come into Room 8 to show and help us make bunting for our wonderful mothers on their special day. It was a lot of fun and hard work to create these but in the end it was all worth it. On behalf of Room 8 we'd like to give a big thank you and shout out to Marie for helping all of us make all of our mothers head over heels on their day. We owe you heaps ;).
These are some photos of us making our bunting.

Sophie's piece of art.

To make your own at home you need…
1. Paper (we used dictionary pages).
2. Black ink pad.
3.  Lettered stamps to press into the ink.
4. Glitter
5. PVA glue
6. Scissors
7. String
8. A pretty tag
9. Hole puncher
10. Coloured paper
11. Shaped hole punchers, love heart
12. A paper bag
13. Paint brush
14.  Ribbons
15. Enthusiasm!

Steps..
1. Decide what you want to say
2. Find the correct letters and then stamp then into the black ink pad
3. Press the lettered stamps onto the paper
4. While you're waiting for it to dry repeat the stamping with love heart stamps (if you want)
5. Decorate your bag and make it look fab
6. When your bunting is dry you could decorate it with glitter
7. Put Sellotape on each top corner of each piece of paper
8. When that is done, use a hole puncher and put one hole over each piece of Sellotape
9. Put string into the holes but do only one piece of paper at a time
10. When all of the string is through the papers, you can make it look nice by putting ribbons around/on it if you like.

100 Word Challenge Jordan & Katelyn

Dear Paul,
It was Saturday afternoon, I told Tommy to come and see, but he refused to. I begged him but he just wouldn’t come!

It was soaring over the hills, closer and closer, lights were beaming everywhere. I was shocked, I didn’t know what it was?
I sat in the living room scared to death and Tommy suddenly walked out to the living room to see what was going on and I shouted, “Look up can you see?”. He stood in shock, he started to rise, I screamed for Mum, “HELP!”
But before I knew it he was gone forever! Please help me!!

Cassie and Paul 100 word challenge

It was a cold lonely night. Bob and Joey were walking through a deserted city, once swarming with people, now a ghost town. No one knew where all the people vanished to. One day they were there and overnight  then they were gone. It was almost as if they were erased from existence never to be seen again.  As Bob and Joey were walking through the city they were giving up hope of finding anyone. They hadn’t seen any trace of human life for miles.
All of a sudden Joey yelled, “ Look up! Can you see... there’s someone up there, motionless almost as if he’s frozen in time...”.

100 Word Challenge By: Sam B And Heath

100 Word Challenge
By: Sam B And Heath J

Look up! Can you see a plane, bird or cloud in the sky? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see what they see? Well I do. It would be like the sensation of an eagle’s eye view but you are the eagle! How cool would that be! The view of a Seagull, Tui or Kakapo! The chance to fly! Be a cloud or anything that can fly! Learn their language, live their life, hunt like them, fish like them, be them! To do that would take real creativity and imagination. That is something you should wonder. J

Cyclone Lusi Technology Challenge

Mrs Binnie started off by telling us what our challenge was, which was to construct a raincoat that had to protect us from Lusi the storm. Then she told us which things we were allowed to have for the challenge. We needed: 4 plastic bags, 6 paperclips, 1 roll of cello-tape and 1 piece of colored paper.

We were put into groups of three to five. We started off designing in our heads what/how we were going to make our raincoat and what it was going to look like. We had to include… A hoodie that had to fully cover our head and a pocket that had to hold a phone. There had to be no gaps and had to fully cover our shoulders and torso.

We chose the smallest person in our group so that the plastic bags could cover most of her body.

We fitted the first plastic bag over her shoulders and also her waist. We cut another plastic bag in half and used that for the sleeves, and last but not least, we put a plastic bag over her head (not covering the face!) to represent the hoodie.

We covered up the gaps with the left over plastic from the bags and paper-clipped the hoodie to the shoulders.
We only had half an hour to complete our raincoat so everyone was in a bit of a mad rush!

After time was up we packed up all the mess we made and made our way to the floor.

We left a gap in the middle of the floor to represent the cat-walk
and at the end Mrs Binnie waited with a camera to take the models picture… We had a lot of fun making and designing our very own raincoat! There were a few disagreements but it all worked out to be a great experience.

106 Word Challenge Kane

DEAR DAN CARTER,
I told her that you had sent that
box to me, but when she lifted the lid... she saw a rugby ball and started to cry. I got told off for letting her open it because she was scared of rugby balls. So my Mum sent all the gifts inside the box to the church. Now  I don’t have anything at all because of her. I felt like beating her up but then I would be grouded for life. So if you could, Dan Carter, can you send me another box and could you put a lock on it please.
