Room 8 Nydia Bay Camp!!!

On the 4th of November 2013 it was finally time for room 8 to go on school camp! The destination we were heading to was Nydia Bay in the Marlborough Sounds. But first, to get there we had a 1 and a half hour bus ride, and a 1 and a half hour boat ride, which meant a LONG day ahead of us!

First of all, when everyone arrived in room 8 at 8:30am on Monday, Mrs Binnie, Ms Mannix, and all 4 camp parents were flat out packing gear, and sorting the last minute things to do/take on camp! Once everything was sorted we had to take our big pack, and our day bag down to the bus which was waiting for us outside the front of the school! The bus driver, Jack, loaded all of the big packs into the bus, and the day bags, we took on with us.
Here is a photo of us inside the bus!
Here is a photo of us loading all of our gear onto the boat.
After the bus ride, once again it was time to unload everything, and to carry it onto the boat, named the Gallieo. Georgia S was lucky enough to be taught how to drive the boat, also she got to sit on the high chair where the driver of the boat would usually sit! Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride, and the 1 and a half hours on it seemed to go rather quickly!

When we finally arrived at Nydia Bay we had to unload all of the gear off the boat, this part took the longest as the lodge was 800 meters away, which was uphill too! As soon as everything was up at the lodge, we sat down and had our lunch! Then we all got to know the place, we set up our bunk-rooms etc. After that,we headed off for a short walk to the beach, where we looked for different sea creatures, we found fish, starfish, scallops, oysters, and tons of mussels! We even discovered that Georgia H is Room 8's female version of Bear Grylls!! She ate a sea-worm, a mussel, oyster, scallops, and even a fish eye - all raw!

Our other highlights of the week was doing the activity rotations! They were: Fishing, Kayaking, Hobo Stove Cooking and Bivouac Building. We also liked going swimming and jumping off the jetty!

Rock Climbing

We have been doing some rock climbing in the school hall.Mr J told us the things we
must have under control to keep ourselves safe so we don't fall off the wall.

These are the steps we must follow:

*Have two partners, one belayer,  the second one holds the belayers harness so that they don't fly off to the top of the wall and of course someone to climb..
*Make sure you and your belayer have your harness on tightly around the waist and fitting comfortably                                      round your thighs.
*When you clip on make sure you (the climber) has one of the carabina's facing inwards and one               facing outwards. Also its best to have your hair tied up so you don't get it caught
*Your belayer just clips their carabina on any way because they only need one.
                                                                                                                                                                    * Make sure your belayer has the Grigri facing towards your belly button.
*You need to check each other very carefully because you don't want to get the harness bit wrong or                else it may cause trouble further up the wall.
*Next you pull the rope tightly so that when you start climbing you have support, then when you fall                     you won't break any bones.
*When you are ready to climb face the wall and say "Ready to climb" and when your belayer's ready               they will say "Ready"
*Now that you've gone as far up the wall that you feel like, you'll say "Ready to come down" and your             belayer will say "Ready" and you lean back without hands on the wall and put your feet on the wall and you'll slowly come down.
*As for the belayer you must slowly pull the lever left and down, but if at any time during this                  procedure you pull it too hard and they come zooming down instantly,  release the lever, that will stop                them from falling.

*When you have finished climbing untighten your harness and    take it off.

*Those are the important rules to follow

HAVE FUN CLIMBING
The Enjoyment of our Awesome Experience…

The way we ended up doing rock climbing with Room 8 is one day the class was in the library and Sam asked if we could do rock climbing. Everyone thought that was an awesome idea and so Mrs Binnie booked us on the rock climbing wall right  away.

We all went to the hall and Mr J taught us all how to attach the harness and take it off, we also learnt how to be  a belayer by
keeping the rope tight when the person is climbing.  Dayla also added heaps of extra tips.

We all got into lines picked by the teacher and the first person from each line got to climb first,
the second person from each line was the belayer, then the third person from each line was the
second belayer who holds the  first belayer. Everybody got a turn at each one.

Zion, Braden and Reuben's Science Fair

Science Fair

Magical Goop

Purpose: To see which genres of music effect the movement of Cornflour and Water on a coverless speaker.

Hypothesis: The beat of the song will move it more as it will provide continuous vibrations.

Method:

1. Combine Cornflour and Water.

2. Get a speaker with no cover and put three layers of glad-wrap over top of it.

3. Put Cornflour and Water mixture on speaker.

4. Play music!!!

Results: The best genre of music was Dub-step.

The 2nd best genre was Rock.

The 4th best genre was a tie between Pop and Opera.

The least effective genre was Jazz.

BLAST OFF!!!

                          BLAST OFF!!!

Last week on Wednesday the whole of Fifeshire  went outside and watched a rocket. We had a few problems along the way when the rocket would not blast off, but after a few adjustments it finally blasted off!

We also had a challenge to see who could be closest to
the rocket when it landed. We had to choose a spot to stand before the rocket blasted off. We were not allowed to move once it was lit.

The winner was Braydon from Room 6. He was the closest to the rocket when it landed.

Fair Testing - Sweet Dyes

We started with the petri dishes by adding a cm of Luke warm water into it, then we added two drops of white vinegar to it. Then Mrs. Binnie told us we needed to choose six Jelly Beans of the same colour. We had to get a cloth that we were trying to dye.  We had the choice of putting the cloth on top of the Jelly Beans or underneath.

My group decided to use the colour yellow. We put the jelly beans on top of the material and waited to see what would happen. We had to wait 3 minutes before putting the material on a paper towel.
The colour yellow didn't have a very good effect because it wasn't a very strong colour.
Since we got to change something in the experiment we decided to change from just one colour of jelly beans to multi-coloured and the effect was better than we thought.

The idea of this was to teach us about fair testing. We had to change one aspect of the investigation only, such as the colour of the Jelly Beans, or how much vinegar we put in, or the temperature of the water etc. We chose to change the colour of the Jelly Beans to multi-colour. Fair testing is about changing one thing and seeing the difference in what it has done. Fair Testing can also be when you're doing a time experiment that you do every thing the same.

We found out that purple and pink were very strong colours and made a very strong mark on the material I really enjoyed the whole thing!

rocket science

                        ROCKET SCIENCE
In preparation for science fair, we conducted an experiment on balloon rockets.

First we got all the supplies for the experiment.
straw
balloon
tape
string

 Method
 1. Cut the straw in half.
 2. Push one end of the string through the straw.
 3. Tie the other end of the string to something.
 4. Blow up the balloon.
5.Tape the balloon to the straw.
 6. Let it GO!

Purpose

Some groups wanted to know how to make the balloon go faster.
Others wanted to know how to slow the rocket down.
The rest of the groups wanted to measure the speed of the rocket.

 Hypothesis

One group thought that if the string was tilted it would slow the rocket.
And another group thought that if you put less air in the it would slow the rocket down.
Conclusion
Some groups were wrong and some groups were right. Some were both wrong and right at the same time.

This is us having lots of fun as a class.

We love rocket science.

We got some interesting results but it was a lot of fun anyway ;).                                                                                                                                          file://localhost/Volumes/LocalHomes/room8imac/Desktop/IMG_0368. JPD
